How To Use Yoga To Improve Your Concentration
Do you constantly feel distracted at work? Do you often take too long to finish a task and wonder where all your time has gone? Then you might have a concentration issue. Distractions are a part of our daily life. With the internet at our fingertips, it can seem like there is no end to entertainment! And naturally, it has led to our not being able to concentrate on anything for long. Who would want to devote all their attention to a tedious task when they could watch the latest music video or find out what their friends are up to on Facebook?

Turn to Yoga
Fortunately, yoga has an answer to your concentration woes. For centuries, yoga has been practiced by people wanting to increase their physical and mental well-being. The benefits include reduced stress, calmer minds, and even weight loss. Yoga also helps you focus and improve your concentration. This contributes to better performance at work or helps you ace your exam. But how exactly is yoga supposed to help you concentrate?
This ancient practice has advocated meditation as a way to achieve physical and mental transformation. To meditate, you must focus on one thing, and let everything else go. In this deep meditative state, your body responds differently. Your blood pressure lowers, your heart muscles relax, and your breathing gets deeper and more relaxed. This means you are calmer and more ‘in control.’ Replicating this allows you to focus even when there are many distractions.
Yoga also advocates deep breathing for a healthier mind. Breathing techniques that are taught in its asanas are useful in reducing anxiety and keeping stress in check. When you can control your breathing and take big, deep breaths, you are less likely to stress out. You will be able to focus more efficiently on the task at hand.
Yoga’s health benefits are another reason for increased focus. As your body gets more fit, your entire body functions better. This leads to improved physical and mental performance.
One of the best yoga poses to improve concentration is the Lotus Pose. While it is one of the simplest poses in yoga, it is also one of the most effective. It is taught in the early stages to help increase concentration and to learn meditation.
To perform the Lotus pose:
- Sit with your back straight, and cross your legs in such a way that your left foot rests on your right thigh and vice versa.
- As you breathe in, close your eyes and relax your muscles.
- Focus on your breathing pattern; make sure you’re taking deep, slow breaths.
In the beginning, you should be able to focus for up to 10 minutes. Gradually increase this time as you develop your concentration powers.
Some other great poses that help improve concentration are Vrikshasana, Virabhadrasana and Shavasana. However, these poses are a little more advanced and should be practiced only when you become more flexible and develop stronger core muscles.
If you want to improve your concentration, look no further than yoga. Regular practice will help you concentrate for longer periods without any effort. Get started today!
