The Beginner’s Guide To Yoga
Yoga and meditation have been around for hundreds of years. Since then, people have realized that there is more than just a spiritual connection that occurs between the person’s conscious self and their subconscious. Doing yoga and meditations can actually ease the pain in your body by improving circulation and reducing blood pressure. Yoga is recognized as a form of alternative healing.
The History of Yoga
Yoga was developed by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in Northern India over 5,000 years ago. Though it wasn’t officially named “yoga” at the time. It was seen as a way to connect spiritually to your body and used different kinds of chants and songs to bring your body into motion. When it started, there was no specific form to it. It was more important to move your body than it was to define the movement. Eventually, in “classical” yoga, it was given form and movement. Participants gave it flow and developed different versions of yoga. As the years go on, more and more variations of yoga are created. Now, there are different types of yoga that are widely practiced.
Hatha yoga is an umbrella term that covers all yoga with named postures. Most western types of yoga are considered to be hatha yoga. Experienced yogis consider “Hatha” yoga to mean a beginner’s class and introduction to yoga. The poses and positions will be walked through and talked through so that the participants will fully understand how their bodies should be moving and how they can improve. The instructors will usually provide yoga blocks and other yoga tools to help you through the practice.
In the 1990s, an American yogi created Anusara yoga. Relative to other types of yoga, Anusara is new to the game. Based on the belief that we’re all filled with intrinsic goodness, Anusara seeks to use the physical practice of yoga to help students open their hearts, experience grace, and let their inner goodness shine through. It encourages the students to connect fully with their expectations and is motivational to the mind. It also helps you to let go of thoughts that might be cluttering their minds. People have said that thoughts of finding Christmas presents, inground pools financing available, or credit card problems have all vanished during their hour in the class. It is the successor to hatha yoga.
Vinyasa yoga is known for its movement and energy. If you take a vinyasa yoga class, the teacher will likely play active music to you moving from pose to pose. The transitions are meant to be smooth, but it’s supposed to keep your heart beating the entire class. There are multiple sequences, and the focus of the class is on the breath.
Ashtanga yoga is based on practices that are thousands of years old. It has recently become popular, especially in western cultures. Its main defining features is its use of vigorous movements that are meant to be linked to the breath. It is usually sweaty and physically demanding. It’s easily confused with vinyasa yoga. The difference is that vinyasa yoga doesn’t always do the movements in the same order and there’s room to change the sequence. In Ashtanga yoga, the movements and the sequences are always the same.
Yin yoga has also become more and more popular in western culture. It is less physically demanding and also extremely physically demanding. It requires you to hold postures for 2 minutes each to get the maximum benefit from each pose. The poses focus on breathing through any pain and thoughts that arise. If negative thoughts do arise during the poses, you are supposed to push them out of your mind and confront them. Then breathe to let them go. The poses are meant to clear your inner self from the stresses that are bogging you down. Yin yoga is a great type of yoga to do to relieve stress and to move on from traumatizing events.
Yoga is an amazing exercise to clear your mind and your body. You will always benefit from trying the practice. Millions of people have found the healing benefits of it to be amazing and have fully incorporated it into their workouts.
