A short introduction to yoga
The word Yoga comes from Sanskrit word ‘yuj’ which means to join or unite. Once integrated into our daily life, yoga is basically a science of ‘living right’. It affects all aspects of a person’s life, from physical and mental to emotional and spiritual. For example, in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, there are eight steps leading to liberation knows as ‘8 Limbs of Yoga’. To understand better what is yoga, it can be helpful to get an overview of these 8 steps.
Yama is the first limb and it refers to vows, disciplines, and practices concerned with the world around us. It deals with ethical standards of living such as pacifism, truthfulness, not stealing, non-greed, and so on. The second limb is Niyama and it usually refers to our duties and actions towards the outside world such as cleanliness, contentment, or self-reflection. Asana, the third limb, is the physical aspect of yoga and it refers to a large number of yoga poses and how to perform them. The fifth limb is Pranayama and it can be described as the practice of breathing – the way we breathe affects our mind, body, and generally our understanding of the world. The next limb is Pratyahara which refers to our detachment from our senses and the external world. This withdrawal gives us the opportunity to observe objectively our habits and, finally, to determine which of them are good and which are bad for our well-being. Dharana, the sixth limb, means concentration and focusing. The seventh limb is called dhyana and it refers to the practice of meditation. Finally, samadhi is the final step and it can be translated as bliss or enlightenment. This stage is characterized by the deep understanding of the world and seeing it as it really is, without any attachments to it, without any thoughts or emotions. There are many ways yoga can enter your life, you just need to find the right one.
If you’d like to put these eight steps into your everyday practice, then there is one more thing you should consider before doing so – creating a peaceful and relaxing at-home yoga space.
Enjoy yoga at home
With some creativity and effort, you can easily transform any part of your home into a beautiful and meditative yoga space. Here are a few suggestions on how to do it.
First, try putting your yoga studio near a window, in a room or area with an abundance of natural light. We all need vitamin D for our well-being. Besides that, there are so many other positive aspects of natural light. The natural light can definitely turn a droll day into a day of happiness. After that, make sure that you remove all clutter and distractions from that yoga space. Just embrace minimalist design and keep your space as light and simple as possible.
However, there are some items that you need to have in order to be successful. For example, besides a standard yoga mat, consider covering that flat surface with comfortable rugs and pillows. That is a perfect way to soften the area and a great way to express yourself. A lot of beautiful and warm rugs and pillows will add a stylish and magical look to your yoga studio. What’s more, you will be happy to spend time in that area. In addition to that, yoga is known for having a calm effect on people and many yogis enjoy a cup of green tea after their practice.
Simply said, your yoga space needs only those tools that will make your yoga practice easy and enjoyable. Think about adding some items such as comfy blankets, towels, and a lot of water to keep you hydrated. Also, you can light a candle or play some relaxing music in the background while practicing or meditating. Your home yoga studio will eventually become a very important part of your daily routine and it’s very important to carefully construct it to suit your preferences and evoke the right mode. Simply said, be creative! There are numerous ways you can make that yoga studio more charming and friendly.
And finally, close that door behind you! Block out all distractions from the outside world and start your yoga practice. After all, it’s all about you and your well-being.
