Why you should start journaling

A Habit of Highly Effective People

It’s not everyday you come across a tool so widely used by successful people.

But this is definitely one.

Journaling, or the process of writing down our thoughts, is considered to be one of the most important things we can do to push ourselves forward. From entrepreneurs, CEO’s, politicians, to saints and gurus, it’s highly recommended and utilized by those who shake and mold our world.

But why?

The reasons can sometimes be personal, but at the end of the day it comes back to the simple desire to make sense of who and what we are.

And for this reason, it remains one of the most spiritual things we can do.

Introspection is the cornerstone of conscious living. It’s the one of the most powerful things we can do for ourselves, because when we know our thoughts and desires, we can begin molding a future for ourselves that serves us.

Journaling assists us with introspection in several ways:

  • Solving Problems- First and foremost, by writing down what bothers us we open the door to solving issues that may be lying under the surface, allowing real issues (and many times our projections) to bubble up.This is important not only from a mindfulness perspective, but also just a practical perspective! Who doesn’t want to solve their problems in a clear way?
  • Clarification- Have you ever felt so frustrated or so confused about a situation that you basically give up? Taking time to throw down your unscripted thoughts opens the door to understanding where you stand.
  • Know Yourself- Often times we get so caught up in following what people expect of us we lose sight of what we want and need. Journaling can help bring our own desires into focus and help us live a happy and fulfilled life.

Sometimes there’s nothing quite like letting all your emotion…ALL of it…come out. Anger, jealousy, frustration, tension, sadness, fear…when we write our thoughts down without interruption we are allowing whatever is pent-up inside us to release. Journaling does this in several ways:

  • Relieves Stress- After a release of emotion, there is a lightness that follows. This is because writing removes mental blocks that prevent us from expressing ourselves freely.
  • Get it Out- Putting thoughts on paper has a releasing effect that can help us move on from painful or difficult situations. Putting it on paper can help the mind let go.

Watch Your Progress

Journaling is the ultimate way to see our life changes. For good or worse, looking back on who we were or where we were is how we keep things in perspective. It shows where we can improve. Try it! I promise you wont regret it.
