Who Is Right In The Battle Of The Heart vs The Mind?
Obviously, it’s the heart!
Generally, one’s mind is in control of the intellect. So, actually it’s a battle between the heart and the intellect.
The Enlightened One beautifully highlights how to distinguish whether it’s the heart or the intellect ruling at the moment. He explains:
In order to have it my way, if I cause you hurt, and yet care a damn about it; if I say, “It has to be done, what are you cribbing about?” At that time, my intellect was in action.
Actually, I should get things done by convincing others. I should feel, “Oh! By doing so, this person is hurt. Let me think if we can do it some other way.” There is no arrogance, no insistence there. Hence, it means it’s the heart that’s working then. If there is insistence, it means it’s the domain of intellect.
Where there are feelings, it’s called heart. There, every action is carried out with utmost awareness that the other person is not hurt; he doesn’t get unhappy in any way. By getting unhappy over the other person’s unhappiness is called sensitiveness. That’s different.
Heart means where one thinks about the well-being of others. One is not bothered about one’s own happiness, but is always concerned about how the other person does not get hurt, how the other person experiences comfort.
In other words, intellect shows other’s negatives. If one’s pride is fed and satisfied, one is positive, and if not, one turns negative. Whereas irrespective of whether one is shown respect or is insulted, if one is always thinking about how the other person is not harmed, how he stands to benefit, that’s called a heartily approach. One whose heart rules, is constantly aware of what is beneficial and what is not to others. And one in whose case the intellect is ruling, he is constantly in the awareness of ‘what is profitable and what is loss-making to me’.
Heart always sees the positive whereas the intellect shows the negative of others. The one with heart is positive, “No, we are all one. Let’s think about that which benefits everyone!’ Must have seen the old granny at home! When kids from the neighbourhood come home, she will say, “Distribute it equally amongst all.” That’s heart. And few mothers, when they see children from neighbourhood walk in, instant is their instruction to their child, “Hey! Hide that chocolate, or else the neighbour’s kid will take it away.” That’s intellect ☺ And where there’s heart, one says, “Make four pieces of this mango and give everyone some. It’s alright if we eat less, but do give it to the neighbour’s kid.”
Heart is standing touching to the Soul whereas the intellect is one with the ego. The more the ego, the farther one is from the Soul. Hence, one with heart will make it to liberation soon. He does hearty talks; there’s no etiquette, no show-off, no ornamental (conceit) in it, it’s all simple and straightforward. What the fact is, that only is revealed by him. He’s full of straightforwardness!
If one with heart makes some mistake, he is quick to own it, “I have made this mistake. Please forgive me and let’s live lovingly with each other.” Such is his adjustment. He doesn’t brag about his own achievements. However, if he sees someone’s good virtues, he heartily appreciates it.
When one hurts others, harms people, sees faults of others, it goes in intellect. But if he is aware of his shortcomings, and he repents over his mistakes and turns around, then he moves towards the heart and progresses in the direction of the Soul.
Thus, to conclude, in the battle of the heart vs the mind (the intellect), believe in the heart
Take the heart’s side and follow what your heart says; you will be right because the heart never lies.
