What To Expect During A Reiki Session

Reiki is an ancient Japanese technique for energy healing. Rei-ki roughly translates to universal life force energy which we call chi in Chinese or Prana in Sanskrit. It is a system to move energy around the body, much like acupuncture, but without the needles. Reiki is a non-invasive practice and the aim is to sense energy patterns in the body so as to identify any irregularities or pockets where energy cannot flow freely. Often these areas in the body are where someone is experiencing discomfort or pain or even some dis-ease. Once this area has been located, a practitioner would work to remove any stuck energy and to re-establish a steady flow of fresh energy.

The session begins by the practitioner creating a flow of energy in their palms and then maintaining that flow throughout the entire session, which lasts approximately 45 minutes. A quick scan is first done of the client’s aura field. Until this point, there is no hands-on contact. Once the scan is complete, which only takes a couple of minutes, reiki healing begins by the practitioner placing their palms on the client’s crown. Primarily the practitioner works on all the seven chakra points, as this is an “energy highway” where the energy has to flow smoothly in both directions. There are other parts of the body that are additionally worked on, such as ears, shoulders, knees, and feet as these are often problem areas. Although each practitioner’s perception is different, most would be able to sense any flaws in the energy pattern by how the sensation changes in their palms. Sometimes, the practitioner will see images in their mind’s eye or hear words that may mean nothing to them but it may mean something to the client. Sometimes this gives clues to what caused the energy to get stuck in the first instance. Similarly, areas where the energy flow is beautiful or vibrant feels very different. Once the problem areas are identified, the stuck or stagnant energy is scooped out to then resume a steady flow of energy. The process can be likened to removing a block in a drainage pipe to maintain a steady flow of water. The session normally ends with the practitioner discussing any findings with the client. Drinking water immediately after the session and for the next few days after a session is recommended.

The experience of the client differs from person to person. The session starts with the client laying down on their backs fully clothed. Normally, during the initial scan, the client may not feel anything. Once the hands-on healing starts, they may feel a tingling sensation, warmth, or sometimes even feel cold. As the client gets more and more relaxed, many fall asleep. Sometimes people may have suppressed old emotions and if these are released during the session, the client may shed some tears. Very often people don’t feel anything at all but that does not mean that the reiki is not being received, if anything they will leave the session feeling very relaxed and rejuvenated. To make the experience worthwhile, it is helpful to be open and receptive to receiving healing. A client may feel worse on the days following the reiki session before they feel better, but these symptoms are usually very mild or absent. Some may have sudden clarity and focus.

The beauty of this technique is that the recipient does not have to be present in-person to receive reiki. Energy can move across time and space and the practitioners are trained to send healing to a person who can be located at the other end of the world. Reiki can also be sent to a situation in the past or future. The experience is no different whether a client has a session remotely or in person, but they can have it done at the convenience and comfort of their own home.

Many hospitals and conventional doctors are now recognizing the use of reiki as complementary treatments. Reiki by no means can completely heal a person, but it can help their body be receptive to traditional treatment. Reiki can help make a speedy recovery after surgery or any other treatments. Some of the ailments that reiki can help include anxiety, stress, minor aches, migraines, cancer, insomnia, trauma, and many more. Reiki can be used for addressing both mental and physical issues. Reiki is a very safe holistic therapy worth exploring.
