Vulcan, Eris, & Tiamat
I want to take a few moments to talk about some miscellany of esoteric astrology before continuing on to deeper conversations. There are a few things to discuss here to flesh out the solar system we use in esoteric astrology. Some of this has been discussed in my book “Astrology in Theory & Practice,” but most of this has not. Let’s start off with that, and if you want to know more about what we discuss here, please consult the aforementioned book.
Esoteric astrology teaches that the trans-Saturnine planets are all higher vibrational counterparts of the inner planets. These planets have been revealed to us as the mass consciousness of the species has evolved to the degree it can handle the lessons those planets have to teach. The basic structure of this is: Uranus is a higher vibration of Mercury, Neptune is a higher vibration of Venus, and Pluto is a higher vibration of Mars. When you stop to think about the correspondences, this makes sense. Pluto is deep-rooted powerful transformation, change, and potentially violence, and Mars, of course, is the planet of energy and historically, war. If you extrapolate this information out, you can easily see what I mean.
In astrological circles though, one conversation that has not occurred in depth is the introduction of the planet Eris to the overall scheme we use. If we expand on the above model, then Eris is the higher vibration of Jupiter. This line of thinking tells us there will also be another planet discovered soon-ish, and it will be a higher vibration of Saturn. That conversation has yet to occur, though, so let’s turn our attention to Eris and Sedna.
Eris was announced as being discovered in 2004 E.V., but its discovery actually occurred in 2003 E.V. There were several names bandied around at the time for the planet, and Eris was eventually decided upon because it corresponds to the goddess of chaos. The reasoning here was that with its appearance, it threw the astronomical community into chaos. Remember that it was around this time that the IAU changed the designation of Pluto, and really went through the entire solar system and cleaned things up from their scientific perspective. This didn’t impact astrology though, but of course, the public outcry was severe. If we expand on the esoteric astrology dimension to this, we see that Eris also corresponds to Jupiterian energy. Like the previous planets, Eris would only be a specialized facet of the correspondences of Jupiter, and the question is: “What are those?” Another planet that was discovered around this time was the planet Sedna, furthering the discussion of Nibiru and how it is probably either Eris or Sedna.
We gain insight by looking around at the world today. Thus we could add spirituality as a correspondence to Eris, in the same manner as someone has a divine epiphany or there is divine intervention. The expansion of consciousness and the rise of the divine feminine in a spiritual context could also be included on the list.
2003 E.V. was more than just the revelation of Sedna, though. Another event that many people have either forgotten about or didn’t know about was that in May of 2003, it was predicted that the planet Nibiru would return. Its return was predicted by many that studied the tablets of ancient Sumeria. Many thinkers say that the stories recorded are metaphors and images that actually telling us the story of something that happened in the heavens. Some claim the destruction of Tiamat was an actual astronomical event that occurred during that time, as an example. Volumes have been written about this, and it’s not worth discussing here, because the important point is that according to their estimates, Nibiru was supposed to return around that year. It was believed that the planet Nibiru impacted another celestial body (Tiamat), causing it to explode, altering our close solar system neighbors. Researchers had worked out that Nibiru has an orbit of approximately 3800 years, which is how we arrive at the 2003 E.V. return. Occam’s Razor tells us that what we call Eris was most likely Nibiru to the ancient Sumerians. However, unlike before, there was no local space collision or cataclysm this time. Rather, the havoc is wrought had to do with society and the astronomical community. To me, this is one of the obvious examples of the truth of the statement that we live during an important point in the development of the species.
You could easily incorporate Eris and Sedna into your astrological readings if you want. While I don’t incorporate it regularly, if people do want it in their chart, I apply it, but in esoteric astrology, it carries a little more weight because it gives us a higher vibration of Jupiter, leaving one planet yet to be discovered, the higher vibration of Saturn.
We’ve been dancing around discussing Tiamat, so let’s circle back to this for a moment. IT is commonly believed that Tiamat was a planet in our solar system that was relatively close to us. Some people claim it was the origin of the asteroid belt, but a little known fact is that if you take all of the asteroids from the belt and put them together, it yields a mass smaller than Pluto, which is very small, comparative speaking. An extension of this base theory is that Mercury was part of it, too, and speculation that was disproven with science was that the Moon was the largest part of it. Recent science has almost conclusively proven that the Moon originated from the Earth though, rather than elsewhere. Regardless of accuracy, these points are worth mentioning because it tells us that perhaps some of the moons from the personal planets were originally part of this theoretical planet between Mars and Jupiter. While that is a conversation for another time and another essay, it fits into our discussion here because it shows some of the fluidity and creativity our ancestors used to describe the world and events around them. They couldn’t explain what was happening, so they conveyed it through stories and images.
Finally, we come to the planet Vulcan. Vulcan is unique to esoteric astrology and opens the gateway to a larger world. Vulcan does not exist as a planet on the physical plane. For starters, it is said to exist between Mercury and the Sun, so it is considered to exist on the astral plane. As its name implies, it is the planet of the forge and the forging process. Where it’s located in your natal chart reveals the life area in which you are undergoing a forging process. It takes its name from the ancient god Vulcan. Its orbit around the Sun is approximately six weeks, to give you an idea of how fast it travels. This also means it is retrograde quite frequently.
You can basically say that technically Vulcan is a theoretical chart point. This is worth noting because it opens the door to working with other theoretical chart points and chart point systems in astrology that can be incorporated into esoteric astrology. Such topics include the use of the Arabic Parts and the Uranian school of astrology. However, each one of those could command their own article, and I prefer to draw things to a close here, for there is a lot to ponder.
