Sadhana: Your Daily Spiritual Practice

Spiritual practitioners all over the world from different cultures and traditions share a similar practice of waking up early in the morning to pray, meditate, and immerse themselves in the energy of the Divine before their day begins. This morning practice is called Sadhana. Sadhana can include anything that connects you with the Divine, including; yoga, chanting, meditation, breathwork, journaling, prayer, intention setting, reading from sacred texts, or inspirational books. Sadhana is an interfaith practice and can be adjusted to include elements to suit anyone’s spiritual beliefs.

Finding your routine

Sadhana establishes a spiritual connection that lasts us throughout the day and helps us be empowered to handle whatever life hands (or throws) at us. Having a special time for prayer and meditation is a deeply self-caring and devotional act. Daily Sadhana practice builds and gathers energy, and can accomplish major shifts in one’s life. You may have heard that many highly successful people have a habit of waking up early to meditate. This is no coincidence; Sadhana sets us up for success.

Sadhana is traditionally practiced early in the morning before the sun rises. If you don’t wake up extra early, you can still do Sadhana. Practice first thing in the morning before you do anything else. Waking up early requires getting to bed earlier. A tip to go to bed earlier is to discontinue the use of devices (or at least set them to “Do not disturb”) when the sunsets.

Create a sacred space for your practice. Designate a quiet, private area of your home for your daily Sadhana. I sit in the same armchair in my living room every day for my practice. Wearing the same head covering or shawl each day during Sadhana also gathers spiritual energy and you can use them for all your spiritual practices, or for when you need extra love and energy.

Decide what your Sadhana will consist of. Choose an amount of time that is do-able for you. Even 5 minutes of meditation will make a difference!

Here’s a sample Sadhana you can try at home (lasts about 40 minutes). Feel free to add or remove sections according to your time needs and spiritual practices that you truly enjoy.

  • Opening: Chant 3 OMs
  • Journaling: 10 minutes
  • Write a 10-item gratitude list
  • Write 10 things you love about being YOU
  • Write your prayers, ask for Divine help and guidance if you need it
  • Set your intentions for your day, upcoming week, interaction, or project
  • Reading: 10 Minutes. Choose a sacred text or inspirational book that will set you up with a beautiful mindset for the day and read for about 10 minutes.
  • Gentle yoga: 10-15 minutes. Do your own practice or follow along with a video.
  • Silent meditation: 10 minutes
  • Closing: feel gratitude for yourself, your Sadhana, your life. Thank yourself for practicing Sadhana today.
  • Chant 3 OMs
