4 Tips To Find Your True Self Before It’s Too Late
Nowadays, it seems like everyone in the world wants to tell you who you are or what you need. Televisions, radios, magazines, newspapers and even websites try to tell you the secret to happiness and usually try to sell you something at the same time. In this world of noise and stimulus, it can be hard to figure out who you truly are and what you truly want.
Getting in touch with your true self can be one of the most useful tools in today’s society. Whether in the workforce, the dating world or even just everyday interactions with friends and family, knowing your true self will help you be more certain, more confident and more ready to take on anything that may come your way. Here are a few tips for finding your true self:
1) Be still
In our modern world, it seems like no one sits still for long. Everyone has another gig or another hustle to pick up. Even when we’re alone, we watch television, play on our phones or browse the internet. With all of this activity, it’s impossible to know yourself.
Getting to know your true self means finding a way to be still. Remember: still means still. Take time to turn off your phone and computer, walk away from your television or your job and just be calm. Letting yourself be alone with your own thoughts will allow you to take stock of yourself: how are you feeling? What do you like about yourself? What do you want to change? Getting out of your own way is the first step to getting in touch with your true self.
2) List your pros and cons
When you find time to be still, it’s important to take stock of what you like about yourself and what you don’t like. What are you good at? What are you not good at? This can be difficult, but it’s important to take stock of what you do well and what you need to change.
Be honest with yourself, but don’t be mean or beat yourself up. Maybe you wish you were more motivated or saw your friends more. It’s important to think about things like that, but don’t give up on yourself. You may also discover you wear really fun socks or make a delicious apple pie. You’ll never really know yourself if you don’t understand the good and bad parts of your own personality.
3) Lose the unnecessary things
You aren’t perfect. In fact, no one is. As scary as that can be, it’s also a very freeing idea. You’re not perfect, so don’t worry if you’ve made some mistakes in life! Now is the time to correct them.
Maybe you have some bad habits that you want to fix, like quitting smoking or working out more. Maybe you have some relationships that are more one-sided than you thought. Don’t feel bad about cutting out things that aren’t making you happy. Live for yourself and your own success, and you will find yourself more in touch with your true self than ever before
4) Reach out to others
Self-discovery is important, but it doesn’t have to be all up to you. If you’re not sure if a certain habit is useful for you, ask a friend you trust! An outside opinion can help pull back the curtain and allow you to see things about yourself you might have missed before. Don’t be afraid to let your friends reveal your blind spots – just make sure you trust them and their judgment.
In our busy modern world, it can be confusing trying to find your true self. Your image of yourself can be clouded by stereotypes and social expectations. Finding time to be still, take stock and change as needed can help you get in touch with the truest form of yourself, though, and can help you start living the life you’ve always wanted to live.
