The Power Of Voice
Ever in my life have I sought thee with my songs. It was they who led me from door to door, and with them have I felt about me, searching and touching my world. It was my songs that taught me all the lessons I ever learnt; they showed me secret paths, they brought before my sight many a star on the horizon of my heart.
They guided me all the day long to the mysteries of the country of pleasure and pain, and, at last, to what palace gate have they brought me in these years of my fulfilment & disappearance? – Rabindranath Tagore
I love this message from the great Indian musician poet visionary Rabindranath Tagore. It encapsulates all that I love about the profound role vocal sound has played in my life, as a gateway into deep listening, and the deepest vibration of oneness within, sourced from silence.
Both science and spirituality agree that every particle of matter, every phenomenon we experience, is a form of resonance or vibration. The human voice is quite literally a mouthpiece of this truth. There is no form of expression more personal, more tied to our identities, than our voices.
How Sound is Powerful
Your sound has the power to release you from duality. Your unique voice is not some separate “chattering thing” enslaved to your personality. Your whole life—body, heart, mind, soul, relationships—is a FIELD OF SOUND – and this sound births the “field of energy” that we ARE as sound-conscious human beings. Discovering this as a direct experience, life can begin to take on a new meaning.
In the words of the master Indian musician and teacher, Hazrat Inayat Khan:
“Creation begins with the activity of consciousness, which may be called vibration, and every vibration starting from its original source is the same, differing only in its tone and rhythm caused by a greater or lesser degree of force behind it. On the plane of sound, vibration causes diversity of tone, and in the world of atoms, diversity of colour. It is by massing together that the vibrations become audible, but at each step towards the surface, they multiply, and as they advance they materialize.” – “The Silent Life”, from Mysticism of Music, Sound and Word)
Hazrat Inayat Khan goes on to explain how,
“Sound gives to human consciousness, evidence of its existence, although it is, in fact, the active part of consciousness itself, which turns into sound. The knower becomes known to her/himself, in other words, the consciousness bears witness to its own voice. It is thus that sound appeals to man. All things being derived from and formed of vibrations have sound hidden within them, as fire is hidden in flint; and each atom of the universe confesses by its tone, ‘My sole origin is sound’”
The Beauty of Sound and Music
Sound and music have bridged generations and cultures for centuries, and it offers a unique and, as yet, untapped resource for the evolution of inner-outer harmony and peace. As we cross the threshold into a deeper connection with ourselves as sound, we can begin to explore together how sound can create a harmonic resonance capable of unifying the most unlikely groups and situations.
The beauty of shared sound and song is that it’s free, everyone can do it. It helps us to build self-esteem, dissolve friction, and generate forgiveness and healing, happiness, self-knowledge, and conflict resolution.
Singing from the heart – whether in the shower, the car or elsewhere – ignites an aliveness that awakens the energies of love. And its presence can have a surprising and unexpected transformative impact.
Voice and sound is accessible to everyone. Used consciously and compassionately it has the power to awaken, empower, and transform your life as well as those around you. I call this authentic voice your ‘naked voice’.
It is accessed from your soul. It is older wiser and deeper than rational and dualistic ego-talk. And it is from this naked core of your being that a deeper “field” of energy or aliveness can be found—a spacious field of awareness that dissolves all separation connecting you with the interconnected web of all life.
I invite you to reflect upon and experience this all-inclusive field as a musical universe singing inside you. I call it a singing field, and it has the power to shift your awareness beyond the ‘us and them’ ‘eye for an eye’ reality.
Begin to ask yourself what, or who is it that generates this field of energy as vibration, sound, and song, a singing energy capable of empowering and unifying the diversity of humanity’s voices as one unified force-field; and from there to open the door on a new language of consciousness, sourced from the unique song within your soul.
Here is a simple vocal practice to explore this for yourself more deeply:
Take in a breath and without a moment’s thought, sound out and let rip with your non-verbal sound on “Ah” or “Eh” or Ee” of “Oh” . Follow the sound to the very end of your breath….. Then listen to the silence that follows, and ask yourself, “what quality of silence does my sound leave behind?”
Shifting your attention from your vocal sound to the silence which follows, will shift your attention from the desire to impress (others) to the simple wish to express(yourself) naturally, effortlessly, with loving presence.
Enjoy finding your naked voice….. And ask yourself, “who is singing?” or, “who says words with my mouth” and you will yourself embarking upon the simple profound art of making your inner life audible.
