How Losing Everything Can Make You Feel Happier, More Peaceful

Do me a favor for a minute: Think about everything in your life that you like and enjoy. Maybe that’s your house, friends, family, community, job, city, activities you participate in; whatever makes you happy about your life right now.

Now imagine that all of that…goes away.

Gah!…Right?!!

I know it’s scary and even downright frightening to consider losing everything you cherish so dearly. But I also know you can do it. And that it’s important to do.

Letting Go of It All

This exercise will bring you a great deal of peace and help you move through a lot of fear you’re probably holding on to.

So in this scenario, you have only you and your immediate family (if you have one). You’ve recently moved to a new city where you don’t know anyone. Everything and everyone you love is far away. Nothing is familiar. Everything is new.

Freaked out yet?!

Good. That freaked out place is exactly where you have to start.

Now, imagine that although everything is different and you don’t know anyone, you’re okay. That you’re safe. That your life even gets better. That you’ll eventually meet supportive, fun, like-minded friends. That you’ll find a nice place to live. That you’ll experience all kinds of new activities and positive situations.

Focus on how GOOD you feel. How wonderful everything is. That your life is one grand adventure and you’re enjoying it immensely.

Are you starting to feel better? More peaceful, perhaps?

Facing Your Fears

Here’s why this exercise is so beneficial — you’re releasing attachment, which stems from fear. You’re letting go of your false beliefs that your material stuff, your friends and family, your city, and even your current life is what you need to be happy.

Now don’t get me wrong: I’m not denying that good friends, a nice house, and a lovely city can’t increase your happiness. They do! But they’re not, and never will be, the keys to your happiness.

Essentially, you’re letting go of the fearful idea that life has to look like THIS in order for you to be happy.

Like the quote from George Addair says, “Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear.”

I adore that quote because it’s so very true. When you can imagine yourself feeling safe and peaceful with something you’re afraid of (even if it’s not going to occur), you can experience true freedom and happiness.

You face and move past your fears and are able to focus on love. You live your entire life from a place of love instead of fear. You know and trust that YOU create your own happiness and can find it anywhere. And that all will always be well.

Now that’s a beautiful way to live.
