Want to take your meditation session to another whole new level? Transcendental meditation (TM) can help you achieve a calm, clear, and awake conscience.
It helps you avoid diverting thoughts and promoting a state of relaxed awareness. Maharishi Yogi founded this technique from ancient Vedic methods of India, which he later bought to the USA in the 1960s. Someone who practices this technique has to sit in a comfortable position with closed eyes and has to repeat a secret mantra given to them. Mantra is a word from a Vedic tradition that helps to build focus and concentration. In this technique, ordinary thinking is transcended and replaced by pure consciousness to achieve stability, stillness, and rest.
It is found that regular meditation reduces chronic pain, anxiety, blood pressure, and cholesterol.
Learning and practicing transcendental meditation
Transcendental meditation requires a seven-step course of instruction from a certified instructor. At first, the teacher describes the general information about the technique and its effects and benefits in the form of theoretical class. This technique is done twice a day for 15 to 20 minutes each, which means one in the morning before breakfast and at night before dinner.
Transcendental meditation does not require efforts or concentration but requires normal breathing and focus on their transcendental meditation mantra. Here are different ways in which this technique rejuvenates our mind and body.
Stress relief
Overcoming stress is the main benefit of the TM technique. It is found that stress is the root cause of all the mind-body dysfunctions.
According to recent research, it is confirmed by many TM practitioners who were earlier suffering from post-traumatic stress that TM has provided them relaxation and stability to their mind and body. They have relieved stress in terms of balancing the nervous system, hormone levels, and increase brain coherence. As a result, it rejuvenates our mind and body.
Higher work efficiency
According to research, people who practice TM technique have improved effectiveness, job satisfaction, psychological settlement and stability, and leadership abilities, which help them to thrive in their workplaces.
Better school performance
According to the research done with students at all their educational levels from primary to university, those who practice TM have benefited a lot as it helps to refresh their mind and body, which increases general and cognitive performance, reduce negative behavior, stress and depression.
Healthy blood pressure
According to a 2017 study, transcendental meditation reduces blood pressure in people who are prone to hypertension, heart disease, and who are under stress. It helps them by refreshing their mind and body. One study found that individuals over 55 years with hypertension live longer if they practice TM as the rate of mortality related to blood pressure decreases by 30%. According to the American Heart Association, TM can be considered as a clinical practice to treat hypertension.
Lower risk of heart disease
Lower blood pressure helps in the prevention of heart disease. Hence, TM provides a major advantage as it benefits people with various cardiovascular conditions such as atherosclerosis, congestive heart failure, left ventricle hypertrophy, and metabolic syndrome. A recent study by AHA showed that patients meditating regularly are 48% less likely to suffer any heart diseases or strokes as compared to others who have similar health conditions.
Helps in quitting smoking
TM meditation has no demand to quit smoking as studies show it comes naturally if one follows this technique. The smoking effect seems to be cumulative as stress reduction is received through meditation; the more person frees themselves from nicotine. According to some facts, those who follow TM their quitting rate is 50% if they give two years to proper meditation. It is shown that people who follow this method reduce smoking 2-5 times larger as compared to other programs made for smoke quitting.
Healthy relationships
There is a correlation between people who practice TM and the healthy and harmonious relationship they form both at home and in the workplace. TM helps them rejuvenate their mind. As those who follow this have control over their mind and body, which leads to marital, physical, and emotional satisfaction.
