I’m Lisa Arends, And This Is My Dharma

I thought I had it all when a text from my then-husband took it all away. And that was the best thing that has ever happened to me. I am a teacher of math, a writer of hope and a coach of inspiration. When I am not helping others, I love to be active and to explore the world around me. I’m still learning to be silent and listen to world within.

Your Personal or Professional Goals:

Personally, I am still learning to differentiate between spilled milk and an oncoming milk truck. I’m learning to relax more and analyze less. To trust in the moments as they unfold and to let go of the need to plan them out in every detail. Yoga and meditation have been two of my biggest teachers here. I call myself a “precrastinator,” I get things done with a great sense of urgency and pressure, only at the beginning of a (often self-imposed) deadline rather than at the end. I would love to quiet my anxiety about not having enough time and learn to work and play in balance.

Professionally, I struggle with having too many ideas and not enough time and/or knowledge to fully bring them to fruition. My goal is to narrow myself down to one or two goals and focus my energies that direction. I have a feeling this may be an ongoing goal!

What’s your offering to the world:

Moments after I received the text that abruptly ended my marriage, I pledged to make some good come out of that experience. That desire to ensure that others believe in themselves and never feel alone has driven me ever since. My message is one of hope and also one of personal responsibility. I write and share both from the perspective of the shattered and broken woman that started this journey as well as the happy and remarried person I am today.

I strive to help people reclaim their power and shed a feeling of victimhood. To learn how their past can be their inspiration rather than their limitation. I want to help people reframe their pain and write their own stories of redemption and triumph.

Who/What Inspires You:

I am always inspired by our canine friends. They never respond with, “I can’t.” They wag for they have rather than growl for what they lack. Dogs err on the side of trust and never hold back their expressions of love. They don’t ruminate about yesterday or worry about tomorrow when there is sun to be enjoyed today.

I seek to help eliminate the stigma around discussion of divorce, especially where there has been abuse or misuse of power. I want to help those who feel silenced by their situations find their voices so that they can share their stories.
