I’m Kat Harrison, And This Is My Dharma…

I’m Kat Harrison, And This Is My Dharma

When I was 15, I contracted a bacterial infection in my ear and skull. For eight weeks, I administered antibiotics through an at-home IV (which I styled with the likes of a tie-dye soccer sock). While I successfully battled the infection, the high dosage of antibiotics wiped away my balance system, leaving behind zero vestibular (balance) function in the form of an invisible disability called oscillopsia. I now swerve through life as a “wobbler”. I had to retrain my body how to read, write, and walk again. I also live with chronic pain in the form of daily migraines and have recovered from 13 surgeries (and counting).

Personal or Professional Goals:

I’m a writer and editor by trade, and began my career at magazines like Glamour and Good Housekeeping. My work has since appeared in outlets like Real Simple, MSN, and Yahoo. I’m currently a contributing writer for The Mighty, an incredible online health community, where I write and connect with readers about how to navigate life with around-the-clock pain and chronic illness (you can read my essays here: https://themighty.com/u/kat-harrison/) Currently, I’m working to publish medical-esque picture books to help bring matters of health into the mainstream. Not every childhood looks the same, and some kids see the inside of a hospital more than they see the outside of a playground. I think it’s important for everyone to see themselves represented in the media they consume. I believe that everyone has a story worth sharing, we just need to listen.

What’s Your Offering to the World?

My offering to the world is to use words for the better and to not just add to the noise. My hope is that my writing can serve as a reminder that it is never too late to keep going or start again. The body and the mind are such complex beings, and sometimes they break down for a bit. And that’s OK. I think it’s important to meet yourself where you’re at, because it’s exactly where you’re meant to be in that moment.

Who/What Inspires You?

I am inspired by people and places that manage to overcome insurmountable circumstances and are still able to see the brightness and the lightness of life. I think there is something to be said for how someone handles the darkness.

My mission in life is to be kind, and to remember that everyone is fighting a battle that we just may not be able to see. No one goes through life without adversity in some form, some just wear it on their sleeve.

Favorite Quote:

“To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else – is to fight the hardest battle any human being can fight; and to never stop fighting.” – E.E. Cummings

What Yoga Has Done For Me:

I can’t say enough about how much yoga has helped me to better understand myself and my body. It is more than just a practice for me, it’s a way to honor everything I have been through and to say to myself over and over–I am worthy of this messy life.
