I’m Julia Toronczak, And This Is My Dharma
I’m finishing up my degree in Biology at UC San Diego, and have a passion for integrative medicine and personal development. This stems from my twin brother Michael, who has Down Syndrome. He’s offered me a unique perspective in life, and was my inspiration to start our blog, Beyond the Waves (www.beyondthewavesblog.com) , as a source of enlightening the image surrounding the special needs community. When I’m not blogging, I love to read personal development books, cook, practice yoga, swim, or go for a run around the San Diego beaches.
Personal or Professional Goals:
I strive to encourage others to be the best versions of themselves as possible. With the hustle and bustle of our modern-day society, putting ourselves first and being compassionate towards ourselves falls off of our priority list. As a 4-year student-athlete in college, I prioritized and eventually fell in love with medicine, health, and wellness. I’ve truly learned the importance in the connection between the mind, body, and spirit, and would love to spread that with others. In particular, with other stressed-out college students, or special needs moms who struggle to find the time for themselves as they embark on their new journey with their beautiful child.
What’s Your Offering to the World?
A different perspective. We all interpret the world in different ways, but we also have the power to control the way we take in the world around us. Shifting our thoughts can result in a dramatic shift in our lives. It’s up to us to decide in which direction that shift will go.
Who/What Inspires You?
My twin brother, Michael, who has Down Syndrome. I always asked myself why it’s so important to keep the Down Syndrome community. With all of the negative stigma surrounding the population, it’s important to advocate on behalf of these genuine individuals. And many of these individuals blindly express love in the purest form.
To share the life lessons I’ve learned from Michael. To empower men and women to achieve their dreams through self-love, enlighten the image surrounding the special needs community, and enrich the lives of others.
“Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.” -Dr. Wayne W. Dyer
Michael loves the ocean so I would love to travel the world with him so that he could experience more of the beauty outside of where we are. In doing so, I would love to spread the message about what Down Syndrome really looks like, and expose the beauty surrounding the Down Syndrome population.
