I’m Gabriella Gricius, And This Is My Dharma
I’m a freelance journalist who works with all kinds of organizations, everything from yoganect, a social network for yogis, to Bad Yogi Lifestyle Magazine, and even to Global Security Review. I’m also the Operational Manager of Sub-Stances, a platform dedicated to giving everyone a voice. I also works as a Senior Research Associate at the Public International Law and Policy Group in Amsterdam. When I’m not practicing yoga or writing, I like to bike around the Hague in-between classes and work and teach yoga. I’m originally from Great Falls, Virginia and have lived all across Germany, Britain and the Netherlands.
Personal or Professional Goals:
Professionally, I’m very devoted to working in companies that match my own passions. Part of that will always involve writing so I am always striving towards writing more, editing more and creating more content that stimulates people’s minds. I am currently working for a pro-bono law firm where I can help others and I want to bring that same drive and passion to anything I end up doing. On a personal level, I’ve always made it my goal to be able to hold headstand and handstand in my yoga practice.
What’s Your Offering to the World?
My offering to the world is my words. I believe that words have the power to change how people not only see the world but also how they act towards one another. I can only hope to offer my words, my positivity, and my thoughts to help others and make the world a better place a little bit at a time.
Who/What Inspires You?
I am inspired by so many people! Of course, my first answer would be my father. As a single parent, he raised me to be strong, independent and deeply care about the people around me. I am inspired by his strength of character and his constant desire to better himself. But inspiration for me comes from so many places. I’m also inspired by Ann Olivarius, a family friend who works as a lawyer advocating for women worldwide. In particular, all of my colleagues on the Sub-Stances team inspire me by their continued efforts and passion towards writing and sharing their words with the world: Jessica Hoefer, Joesphine Bush, and Florane Lavend’Homme.
My mission is to constantly strive to be kinder and to bring happiness to others and myself.
“Always try to be a little kinder than is necessary” – JM Barrie
One thing that wouldn’t be evident at all from my online persona is that I used to weigh around 250 lbs. Over the past 6 or 7 years, I’ve lost around 100 lbs. It is by no means easy to lose weight and still have to always fight negative self-talk and body-image problems. But through constant work and by acknowledging that self-worth should not be tied to how you look – it is possible. So, when I talk about being happy and helping others, much of that comes from myself and the knowledge that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.
