Natural Detoxification: Keeping Your Liver Healthy
It is important that you do a liver detox at least once a year as the liver is one of the most vital organs of our body. A liver detox helps to ensure that it functions properly in producing over 13,000 different chemicals and 2,000 various enzymes used by the body.
It is only the liver that can purify the bloodstream and that is an incredible amount of work done every day. It is one of the largest organs in the body, with the heaviest weighing in at over 3 lbs. It is a smooth, cone-shaped organ that is protected by the rib cage on the upper right of the abdomen. It carries out over 500 different processes every day involved with filtering and regulating the various chemicals in the body.
Some of its many duties include:
- Aiding digestion
- Distributing nutrients in the food you eat
- Removing toxins from the blood
- Storing glucose
- Filtering chemicals
- Getting rid of old blood cells
- Maintaining the blood sugar level
The liver can also regenerate so it can continue functioning even after losing up to 90% of its cells. Because it does so much, the whole body can run amok when it is not functioning properly. And because of many environmental pollutants, people are exposed to, the liver is often overworked. Over time, it will cease to do its job effectively, making the body prone to illnesses.
Some of the health problems associated with a toxic liver are:
- Acid reflux
- High cholesterol
- Skin disorders
- Dark circles under the eyes
Luckily the liver is resilient and these diseases can be prevented and reversed.
A liver cleanse is not something to take on lightly or without conducting any research first. It should be done in stages. Most naturopaths recommend that before a liver cleanse, a person should do a colon cleanse first and then a kidney cleanse. Why is this? When you go through a liver cleanse the various toxins that have been stored in the liver are dumped into the body. The colon and the kidneys must then eliminate these toxins as rapidly as possible. If these organs are not at peak function, they will not be able to rid the body of toxins quickly, leading to even more problems.
Once you have completed the other cleanses, it’s time to focus on the liver.
Herbs For Liver Detox
There are many herbs you can use in a liver detox. These can be used on their own or in various combinations.
- Turmeric, a powerful antioxidant, increases bile production and helps with the treatment of gallstones.
- Milk Thistle is a strong anti-toxin.
- Yellow Dock helps dissolve fat in the liver and is an excellent anti-toxin.
- Dandelion is an immune system booster and anti-toxin.
- Licorice Root helps neutralize the effects of powerful chemical toxins.
When Should You Not Detox?
You should avoid detoxing if you are or have:
- A child or teen
- Getting over an illness
- Heart Disease
- Kidney Problems
- Chronic illness
You can also use prepared supplements to help with detoxing the liver. Several companies make herbal combinations that work to detoxify and subsequently strengthen the liver and surrounding organs. Here are some you can use:
- Arogyam Pure Herbs Markav Capsule
- Arogyam Pure Herbs Shodhan Capsule
Usually, it is best to take these supplements in conjunction with a dietary change, or after a more in-depth liver cleanse. Read the instructions carefully and always check with your healthcare provider or doctor first. By doing a liver detox and then following a healthy eating plan for life, which includes eating organic and hormone-free foods, and by taking supplements that have been formulated to strengthen your organs, you can maintain an energetic and healthy lifestyle well into your retirement years.
