According to a poll done on YouGov.com, most Americans wake up feeling tired and foggy. Only one out of every seven people said they woke up feeling refreshed and ready for the day. It may be your first instinct to reach for the coffee to get going in the morning, but there are several other ways to help your body feel more energized throughout the day. Here’s a list of four health tips that can help you gain and retain more energy during your busy day.

1. Eat the Right Foods

There are many foods that can help your body replenish its energy levels. For example, did you know that bananas can actually be a great source of energy? Not only that, but a diet that has a low glycemic index can help you maintain your energy. Foods that have a low glycemic index release their sugars at a more gradual rate, keeping us alert for much longer than high glycemic foods. Foods that have a low glycemic impact include nuts, whole grains, leafy greens, beans, vegetables with high fiber content, and some fruits. The next time you need a pick-me-up at the office, try a light salad for lunch to avoid that mid-afternoon crash.

Feeling tired can be an indication of dehydration, so be sure that you are drinking enough water throughout the day.
