3 Theories On The Origin Of The Universe According To Hinduism

Everyone at some point in their life must have wondered, how it all began and where we came from. Science has offered us the Big Bang Theory with a lot of evidence to back it up. Every religion attempts to do the same, to try and satiate our curiosity about our origins.

Om

This is a symbol sacred to not only Hindus, but also Buddhists, Jains, and Sikhs. It is said that the universe was created out of nothing with the sound of the Omakara. It has a great reverence in many holy texts like the Vedas and the Upanishads. The beginning of anything good and holy always starts with the chant of Om, symbolizing our origins.

From Lord Vishnu

Vishnu is considered one of the three main deities of Hinduism (Trimurthi). He is the Keeper of the Creation made by Brahma the Creator and maintains stability in the universe till they are destroyed by Shiva the Destroyer. According to the Puranas, he rests on the great serpent Sesha, in the divine Milky Ocean and dreams the universe into reality. So, are we a part of His divine dream?

Brahman

Not to be confused with the word Brahmin, which is one of the four castes or varnas; it literally means the Universe or the Ultimate Reality. It is described as formless, limitless, all-pervasive truth which never changes but creates change. We are all part of it.

According to this theory, there are only two things – Atman, which is the soul and the Paramatman, which is the Supreme Being. Atman is present in every living body. A body can be destroyed but a soul never will. It will undergo endless cycles of re-birth and death until it joins the Paramatman, the Ultimate Being, a state which is referred to as Nirvana or Moksha by many religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and so on. These are some of the theories explaining our origins. In fact, if we consider their meaning in depth, they seem quite scientific and show us that the burning question of where we come from has been asked ever since humans developed a consciousness. It is important that we loo for answers tour origins in our old sacred texts with an open mind.
