The Best Essential Oils For Enhancing Your Workout
There are some clever essential oil uses that can be incredibly beneficial workout companions. Essential oils have the power to relax your mind, soothe sore muscles, boost your performance naturally, and even put you in the right mindset if you’re thinking about skipping your workout. Using the right oils at the right times can both get you ready to workout and help you to recover faster afterward, not to mention the many other health benefits they provide.
Here are some essential oil uses to help you get the most out of your workout.

Lemongrass is a great essential oil for natural pre-workout support. It supports healthy weight management and an overall good energy with the key component known as citral, which is high in lemongrass. Citral is a compound that helps support the production of heat in the body (a process called thermogenesis), which is essential in a good workout.
Simply rub 4 to 6 drops of lemongrass oil on your feet or elsewhere on your skin.
If you’re feeling particularly sluggish or uninspired to workout, take a sniff of peppermint oil. Just one whiff or drop of this oil can do wonders for improving your mindset and energizing you. It’s also great for other types of “workouts”, such as a big presentation at work or an exam. The scent of peppermint brightens your senses and gives you a can-do attitude, helping you function at your best and stay focused.
Keep the scent present by putting a drop on each wrist 20 to 30 minutes before you begin. It can also improve your breathing during a workout; just massage 4 to 5 drops on your chest 5 minutes beforehand. Peppermint also helps with muscle fatigue, and you can apply before or after your workout. Just rub a few drops into the muscles you’re concerned about, and combine it with some gentle stretching of those muscles.
Many of us find the scent of eucalyptus soothing, but it is so much more than that. It’s great for putting you in the right mood and energizing you before a workout. Mix a few drops of eucalyptus with geranium, peppermint, rosemary, and palmarosa, and about 4 ounces of water. Spritzing that mixture on any exposed skin prior to exercising helps to keep you cool. This is especially useful when it’s hot outside.
Similar to peppermint oil, eucalyptus is also great for your respiratory health, feels quite soothing in an Epsom salt bath, and can help with inflammation in over-exerted muscles.
If you’re looking for good essential oils for sore muscles, marjoram is great after working out. You can either diffuse it, inhale it directly, or use it in tandem with a massage. It has many soothing qualities, not just for your mood but for your muscles as well. Massage it into your legs, arms, and lower back. You can also add a few drops to your post-workout bath to relax and loosen your muscles.
Cleaning Your Yoga Mat
Taking proper care of your yoga mat is important not just for hygienic purposes, but also to ensure its longevity. Luckily, you can do this with a simple mixture of essential oils!
Fill a small 4-ounce spray bottle ¾ of the way with distilled water. Add 2 drops of tea tree oil (it’s naturally antibacterial and antifungal), and 1 drop of your favorite essential oil. It’s optional, but you can also add witch hazel or white vinegar (about ¼ of the spray bottle). If you do decide to do the last step, you may want to overpower the strong odor by adding a few more drops of essential oils.
So whether you’re getting ready to hit the weights, hold some yoga poses, or recover from a taxing session, essential oils can be a great workout companion!
