These days it’s not just pandas that are obsessing over bamboo. The entire clothing industry is falling in love with this incredible material.
For centuries, Asia has been using bamboo for its strength, building it into everything from canals to huts. But no one ever dreamed it could be made into clothing until a new method of industrial extraction was invented. By pulling cellulose from the pulp, bamboo can be refined into a type of rayon. From there, it’s broken down further so it can be turned into clothing, towels, and sheets.
The demand for bamboo clothing as increased so dramatically that from 2004-2016 the market grew by 10,000%! Whoa! Of course, this is primarily because bamboo’s qualities just simply make economic sense for the customer and the manufacturer. It’s affordable, widely available, and an incredible texture.
Sadly, most people have yet to try this amazing fabric simply because it’s relatively new in the industry. For most, it’s a question of experience — because once you experience bamboo clothing, it’s hard not to become a believer. So why exactly would anyone want to wear bamboo clothing?
1) Soft as silk without the cost
I don’t know about you, but one of the most important things I look for in clothing is how it feels against my skin. I’ve had scratchy clothes plenty of times in my life, and sometimes they’re just downright uncomfortable. Bamboo is crazy soft. When I first felt the material, I honestly thought it was some sort of silk! Wearing it is a total shift in the way you feel on a day-to-day basis. If comfort is a concern, bamboo is definitely your friend.
2) The greenest material
Bamboo is one of the most environmentally friendly materials you can use for clothing, way more so than cotton. It needs very little water to grow and is 100% biodegradable because bamboo is essentially a giant woody grass. It’s also fast-growing, almost impossible to mismanage, and naturally resistant to insects because of a naturally occurring chemical it produces called Bamboo Kun. Objectively speaking, it’s amazing for the planet.
3) Moisture-wicking for on-the-go wear
If you’re in a job that involves you working hard and getting a bit sweaty, bamboo clothing is perfect for you. Bamboo is 40% more absorbent than cotton, which means it wicks moisture way better. Bamboo also has something known as ‘micro-gaps’ that allows air to easily pass through. This makes it a fantastic material for exercise.
4) Easy care
For such a soft material, bamboo is surprisingly strong and resilient. It doesn’t easily pill or shrink. This is great for someone like me that tends to throw everything in the wash together without a thought! Another added bonus is that it’s naturally anti-bacterial, which reduces odor.
5) Color barely fades
Since bamboo is more absorbent, it requires less dye than cotton. It can showcase color really well, and hold on to that color longer. You can wear bamboo for years because it just doesn’t fade.
6) Naturally hygienic
Bamboo is naturally antimicrobial. It’s amazing, really. It’s resistant to mold, bacteria, and odor. Even after being washed a million times, its antibacterial qualities remain. It’s great if you have skin conditions such as eczema, or other sensitivity issues.
