Are Anxiety And Depression Permanent Or Can They Be Cured?
Gnani, the Enlightened One, explains:
There are two kinds of depression:
One which is since birth. That which is bound in the past life, and is frozen now when brought forward into this life.
Another which is on account of self-negativity. Here, one is normal, but has come into the effect of depression. For instance, if one is insulted 2 – 5 times. Suppose, when the work is not done right and his superior yells at him, “Don’t you know how to do this? You spoiled it all.” Listening to this, the latter’s psychology is affected, “Oh! I spoil the work. Now, I will not be able to do it properly? I don’t know how to do it. I will never be able to do it. People do things so nicely, but I have no skills.” It is due to this self-negativity that depression comes. This can be cured.
Depression that one has brought along from the past birth is verily the result of the self-negativity that one has sketched earlier…
Suppose, if one keeps repeating this self-negativity for 1-2 years, the (karmic) seeds of depression are being constantly sown. Now, from one seed, thousands of fruits sprout. So consequently, in the next birth, one spends the entire life in depression (that which is since birth). And he is not able to comprehend why so, as depression has become his nature now? The fruits keep coming of the (karmic) seeds he has sown. Just like a cat remains a cat throughout its life and a snake remains a snake throughout its life, their nature is that of a cat or a snake only; similarly here too, by nature one becomes anxious and depressed now for the entire life, because in the past life, it was in one’s belief, and as a result, in this life, it has manifested in action.
Here, in this birth (when one is sketching self-negativity yet), it is still in the process, the result is not frozen yet. His psychology has been impacted when someone says, “You do not know anything. We don’t need you. We don’t want you in our department. You don’t have any skill, you don’t understand anything.”
As a result, one cultivates self-negativity. He starts believing, “I don’t know anything. I am a useless person, Am of no help to anyone. My life is of no value, I must die now.” His ego is crushed to pieces.
Even this – what all he says and believes regarding himself today, is because, a small (karmic) seed (of self-depressing thoughts and words) was sown by him in the past life, whose result has come now in this life.
However, if one attains Self-Realization and regains confidence, “Why would I not know? I will be able to do it. I can do it.”, and thus keeps breaking the self-negativity, then one is able to come out of depression.
Doctors assist this process by giving anti-depressants to slowly stop or run down the pace of negative revolutions that are clouding his mind.
When the belief in the mind gets spoilt, it creates a chemical imbalance in the body
Doctors give medicines and bring about this balance so that one’s self-esteem comes up a little.
For instance, a mother-in-law keeps calling her daughter-in-law mad. However, more than a year passes by, but the daughter-in-law pays no heed to what her mother-in-law says. She’s confident that, “I am not mad, there’s nothing wrong with me.” Thereafter, her husband also intermittently says, “How mad you are, you do not understand anything.” She’s taken aback at times, but soon maintains, “No, no, I am fine. I am absolutely fine.” Then, some day, her friend visits her home and says, “You are mad, this is how you keep your home?” At that time, she feels, “Am I really mad?” A psychological effect comes about. The moment the belief is spoiled, the case goes out of hand.
Therefore, one should never allow one’s belief to spoil!
And to make that happen, Self-Realization is the remedy!
