3 Ways to Balance Your Sacral Chakra

Sacral Chakra

When we feel out of balance in our lives, every part of our inner being becomes unbalanced.

In this series, we will be focusing on each of the Seven Chakras to heal, balance, and receive positive energy for genuine wellbeing and vitality.

Known as Swadhisthana in Sanskrit, the Sacral Chakra (orange) is most recognized with intimacy, emotions, and desires, sensual and life pleasures, and the reproductive system.

The Sacral Chakra is located just below the tailbone, and when fully open and balanced it allows creativity, intuition, satisfaction, and experience to flow freely without judgment or fear.

When blocked, the second chakra causes depression, low libido, emotional issues, lack of creativity, and fear of happiness.

Tip #1: Enjoy Life’s Little Pleasures

When it’s hard to find satisfaction in life, starting from the little pleasures can add up.

Enjoying a cup of good coffee or tea, watching a sunset, receiving a hug from a loved one, or taking in the scents of the season can all ignite the second chakra towards balance.

Tip #2: Reignite the Sacral with Healing Foods

The color orange is associated with the Swadhisthana, therefore some of the best food choices include yams, winter squash, pumpkin, oranges, peaches, apricots, mangoes, papayas, carrots, hummus, and foods high in essential fatty acids and protein, such as sesame seeds, wild-caught salmon, flaxseed, hemp, and tuna.

Tip #3: Practice Sacral-Healing Activities

Regularly practicing hip-opening poses from yoga will strongly benefit the Sacral every day, most notably the Bound Angle Pose (Baddha Konasana) and Open Angle Pose (Upavistha Konasana).

Any activities that include the second chakra’s element – water – will also be healing.

This includes walking on the beach, swimming laps in the pool, taking a bath or shower, and even simply dangling your feet in the water.

No matter how difficult it may be to open up emotionally, sensually, and physically, allowing a blocked second chakra to slowly open up will not only realign these important basic instincts, but also bring back a strong passion for life in relationships and in every experience through the appreciation for the moment.
