Signe Whitson is a School Counselor, author, and national educator on Bullying Prevention. In her books, articles, and workshops, Signe offers professionals, parents, and students practical strategies for understanding and ending bullying. She is also the Chief Operating Officer of the LSCI Institute, an international training program that helps young people turn crisis situations into learning opportunities.
Your Personal or Professional Goals:
My work is centered on helping professionals and parents understand the most effective ways to genuinely connect with young people and to use these connections to bring about positive long-term changes. Teaching adults to look beyond disruptive or disrespectful surface behaviors and see the real needs of each vulnerable young person is the foundation of my training and writing. As a School Counselor, I have the best job in the world–getting to reach, teach, embolden and empower amazing young people every day.
What’s your offering to the world:
I’d like to offer the world many things—an understanding of the needs of vulnerable youth, ideas for how to meaningfully connect with kids, the understanding that kids who are “hard to love” are the kids who need love the most, compassion for the life events that we may never know about but that drive kids’ challenging behaviors—but ultimately, I believe my most important offering is raising my two beloved daughters. I hope I can guide them in ways that are worthy of their potential for being kind, healthy, happy, creative, productive, joyful human beings.
Who/What Inspires You:
Oh, I have so many! I am a big believer that “words matter” and so I take inspiration from many quotes. This one is the inspiration for the title of my first book, How to Be Angry: An Assertive Anger Expression Group Guide for Kids & Teens:
“Do not teach your children never to be angry; teach them how to be angry.” –Lyman Abbott
I also love these words from my mother’s mentor and Cornell University professor, Urie Bronfenbrenner:
“Every child needs at least one adult that is irrationally crazy about him or her.”
Signe is the author of six books, including the recently published 8 Keys to End Bullying Activity Books for Kids and Tweens and its Companion Guide (sold together or separately) for Parents & Teachers. Other books include:
