I am excited to be fulfilling a dream of being an entrepreneur — and helping advance the cause of women in the workplace at the same time. I feel so lucky to be working with my former colleague, Georgene Huang, to improve the workplace for women by creating transparency through Fairygodboss. I am also beyond excited to be the mother of two amazing children, and wife to an extraordinarily supportive husband who even does yoga with me.
Before venturing out to found Fairygodboss, I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to work at great companies including The Wall Street Journal, Estee Lauder and Google. I graduated from Yale University, and received an MBA from Kellogg. I started doing yoga about 9 years ago, and it has become an essential part of my life. I’m a strong believer that everyone should practice yoga!
Your Personal or Professional Goals:
To be the best mother I can be. To build a successful business from the ground up. To make a difference to our world. To be able to hold a handstand in the center of the room.
What’s your offering to the world:
I think my offering to the world comes through my energy. For better or worse, I was born with a lot of energy and a lot of enthusiasm — or as I sometimes refer to it, “relentless optimism in the face of all evidence to the contrary.” While at times these characteristics have not served me well, there are two sides to every coin. I think yoga has helped me reach a point where I can harness my energy and use it appropriately. It has also taught me how to slow down and take time to breathe and enjoy the moment. (Unfortunately, now that I’m an entrepreneur I do that a little less.)
Who/What Inspires You:
My children inspire me because they see so much possibility in the world. My husband inspires me because he overcame the challenge of growing up in communist Romania to come to the US and achieve more. New York City inspires me: I have lived here my whole life, and I love the vibrancy and the symphony of varied ideas and background — background should have an S backgrounds. My mother inspires me because she’s still kicking asana (ha!) in the business world, just as she’s rounding the corner on her 70th birthday.
And, my co-founder, Georgene Huang inspires me. She has a courage and a confidence in her bones that I have never had — but with which I hope I’ll be able to infuse my children.
My mission in the larger sense is to help women find a better path in the workplace. I believe that women have so much to give to Corporate America, and that corporations perform better and make much better decisions when women are part of the process. (Also true in government…)
My mission is also to create a valuable, profitable, impactful company from the ground up.
“Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.” – Bill Bradley.
I love this quote – because it’s so fundamental to building a business. But it also is truly indicative of the 6-year journey (interrupted by 2 pregnancies) I’ve been on to be able to handstand in the center of the room…
Learning at an Early Age
I was 35 years old when I officially became a salesperson, andI wish I had done it so much earlier in life. To be a good salesperson, you have to figure out how to explain things clearly and succinctly; to build relationships; to really listen and respond based on someone’s perspective, and to be told no. A lot. I think everyone should experience sales early in life – and we would all be better equipped for what lies ahead.
