Mikah Meyer is currently on a world record journey to all 417 National Park Service sites, inspired by his road trip loving father’s passing from cancer. The 3-year expedition will make him the youngest person to experience all the NPS sites, and the sole person to accomplish the feat in one continuous trip. As an openly gay travel writer, Mikah wants to increase LGBT visibility in the outdoors/travel industries, and hopes to become the first openly gay host of a mainstream travel show. His book “Life’s More Fun When You Talk to Strangers (http://www.tbcmikah.com/book) ” advocates for taking audacious risks when following one’s dreams, and shares the power of the American road trip: proving you don’t need to Eat Pray Love in Italy, India and Indonesia to have a transformational experience. Your Personal or Professional Goals:
To be the first openly gay host of a mainstream travel show and show queer kids around the world that their life options go far beyond the stereotypes.
What’s your offering to the world:
Authenticity. As a gay Christian, my existence can often be difficult for communities who see those terms as mutually exclusive. By being open and honest about who I am, I hope to help others feel comfortable being who they are.
Who/What Inspires You:
Rogue people. Those willing to subvert the dominant paradigm and live in ways that feel right to them, even if that bucks social norms. Vanlifers are a great example of this, or people like Warren Buffett (2nd wealthiest person in the USA) who uses his power to advocate for greater income equality. But even “normal” people can do extraordinary things in their everyday lives, like talking with strangers on public transportation or interacting with communities outside their socioeconomic status.
To always dream bigger
“It’s hard to be what you can’t see” – Children’s Defense Fund Founder Marian Wright Edelman.
It’s a good reminder that all of us, even in seemingly simple acts, can be revolutionaries for helping others see their own potential.
