For thousands of years, Ayurveda had a fascinating perspective on personality: they are comprised of the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—and are derived from the five elements. Also known as mind-body types, the doshas express unique blends of physical, emotional, and mental characteristics. In Ayurveda, health is defined as the dynamic state of balance between mind, body, and environment.

The Vata Dosha is thought to be made up of space and air, the elements that are associated with motion.Vata governs all movement in the mind and body. It controls blood flow, elimination of wastes, breathing and the movement of thoughts across the mind. Since Pitta and Kapha cannot move without it, Vata is considered the leader of the three Ayurvedic Principles in the body. People with a predominance of Vata will be quick, vibrant, dynamic, creative and airy. They’re likely to be slender and unable to gain weight easily, tends to have dry skin and fine hair. Intolerant of cold, windy weather which leads to cold hands and feet in winter. If imbalanced, all this movement could make a Vata person indecisive, stressed and ungrounded.
Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts, and Cameron Diaz are Vata. Woody Allen is also a prime example of the tall, slim, fast-talking, impulsive, creative Vata type.
Kapha is the combination of earth and water elements. It is sticky, oily and heavy and keeps things together. Kapha keeps our cells together and our body in a shape. They’re often large framed with a clear complexion and a slow pulse rate. Honorable and loving, solid, dependable and very loyal. Enjoys tradition and resistant to change. Sometimes lethargic and greedy. Kapha personalities are calm, and kind, but on the negative side, could be prone to lethargy, heaviness, and dullness.
Oprah Winfrey, Christina Ricci, Kate Winslet are prime examples of the Kapha energy.
The Pitta dosha is composed mainly of fire, with some water, and is transformative. It makes up the digestive fire in our bodies, transforming food into nutrients. Pitta people are focused, determined, confident, aggressive, and when out of balance can be dictatorial, and easily angered. Medium build and height, soft fair skin. Prone to acne and moles. More likely to go grey early or, if male, suffer from baldness. Intolerant to the heat and the sun.
John F. Kennedy was Pitta. Pitta types make great leaders. Cindy Crawford, Jennifer Aniston, Madonna are other obvious Pitta types.
Interestingly, you may be Vata-Pitta, in which case Vata would be the most dominant, followed by Pitta, and a little Kapha. or Kapha-Pitta. Some people may even be tri-doshic, meaning they have all three doshas in equal amounts, but this is very unusual.
