Since human beings entered the world stage tens of thousands of years ago, gemstones have been highly prized and sought. Without exception, every long-lasting civilization in world history prized them, often using them for spiritual ceremonial purposes. Many cultures even tied their national identity to them, as in the case of the Mayans with turquoise.
But few investigated and understood the spiritual impact of gemstones like the Indian culture did. The ancient Rishis attached deep significance on the energy emanating from crystals, and would often have their followers wear them to mitigate certain negative energetic issues.
Sadly, many people don’t realize some of the basic rules when it comes to purchasing gemstones and they simply don’t get everything they could from their purchase. Here’s how to do it right.

1) Buying the wrong stone
First and foremost, a lot of people believe that they should select the prettiest stone. But that couldn’t be more wrong!
Healing gemstones only work when they’re energetically connected to the wearer. That means they make up for any energetic discrepancies you might have, and fill in gaps. This allows you to find a deeper sense of peace and spiritual fulfillment, and (as the ancient yogis claimed) helps to mitigate bad karma coming your way. Pretty powerful stuff, right?
So how do you select the right stone for YOU?
Our own energetic needs are determined not so much by external circumstances, but our internal life. For instance, you may find that a certain circumstance has caused you to feel hurt, and therefore less likely to trust others. Or maybe you’re having trouble expressing yourself in the workspace, or you need to work on your confidence. All these things can cause a bit of turmoil in life. And while you should meet the issue head-on (as in introspection), sometimes an extra boost is needed.
Gemstones can greatly help with that. But first, you have to get really honest with yourself: Where do you feel like you need to do some work on yourself? What’s within you that’s preventing you from leading the life you’ve always wanted?
Personally, I recommend using a basic test to help you figure out where you could use a little support from gemstones.
Once you determine what’s working for you and what’s not, you can begin to do some research into which gemstones can help. But see if you can identify the specific emotion first, and then go from there. Then you can begin to do research based upon what serves you, and not what looks good.
In today’s world, it’s easier than ever to find what you’re looking for online. The only problem is we don’t know how the product was made. Look for something that says the brand does Fairtrade. Fairtrade ensures that artisans are getting good working conditions, a living wage, and sometimes even benefits.
3) Not having a purpose in mind
If you’re going to buy something, make sure you have a plan to wear it — especially with healing gemstones. All too often, people buy jewelry and only wear it on special occasions. But healing gemstones need to be worn as often as possible to get their benefit.
So whether it’s a bracelet, necklace, ring, or earrings, get an idea of what would work for you before your purchase. You’ll be happy that you did!
