Crystals, rocks, and gemstones are powerful tools to help you transmute negative energy and revitalize your chakras. It seems only fair that after all that hard work you show a little love and gratitude to your stones. Cleaning and recharging your crystals, rocks, and gemstones is very beneficial to preserve the power and benefits that each one holds. It is easy and even fun to recharge your stone’s “batteries,” and there are many ancient ways to keep your stones healthy.
Below are just some techniques that I have learned over the years and use regularly with great success!
The easiest way to clean is simply by running lukewarm water over the stone and then gently drying it off using a soft cloth. Please note, however, that not all stones like water. Water can even cause damage to some stones: Angelite, Calcite, Malachite, Kyanite, Selenite, Kunzite, Turquoise, and Labradorite. Look it up first before you submerge.
You can use a few drops of essential oil in a small bowl or cup of lukewarm water. You can also create an atomizer by taking distilled water and a few drops of essential oil and putting together in a spray bottle. Shake well before spritzing directly on the stone and then letting dry. Juniper is great for releasing negative energy, while Lavender can sooth and balance stones that are used to assist in any type of healing process.
You can also put your stones in a bowl or container with a lid that contains salt and let it sit for three days. You can use ordinary table salt, but Dead Sea Salt works the best and is readily available at most specialty grocery stores.
You can put your stones in a bowl and simply light an herb, sage or sweetgrass bundle and gently “smoke” the stones. Then, let them rest for a while before using them again.
Quickly and carefully pass the stone through a candle flame several times. Be careful not to burn yourself or the stone in the process.
This seems too simple, but any window sill or porch on a sunny afternoon can also be the best way to recharge and clean your stones.
Be mindful that some stones don’t particularly like sunlight: Smokey Quartz, Aventurine, Rose Quartz, Fluorite, Sapphire, Kunzite, Amethyst, Beryl, Aquamarine, and Citrine. This can cause them to fade.
The gentle light of the moon can re-energize your crystal and even imbue them with power.
Burying in the Ground
Burying your stones in the ground for a few days is also another way that you can energize your stones.
One tried and true method I use is to take Selenite, which is a gypsum crystal that is shimmery and white, and is often associated with the crown chakra. It is great for energy clearing. You can lay any stone you want to clear and re-energize next to it for 24 hours. Just note that Selenite is a softer stone and shouldn’t be dropped or put in water.
Reiki or Prayer
If you have Reiki training, or you know someone that does, you can have them use their intentional healing energy to clean and re-energize the stone. You are a powerful being! Simply hold the stone you want to clear in your hands; pray over it with the intention of clearing and energizing the stone. Stones are fascinating and fun! Sometimes you respond or are drawn to a specific stone because you need it as much as it needs you.
